'Removing Sin'

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : This game is a bit of a messy race, which can involve many kids as you like... we normally have 2 competing at a time but it doesn't really matter. The competitors sit at a table - cover with garbage bags to avoid mess - with their hands behind their back, and a small tub of yoghurt or custard each. (It works best if it is white, eg. vanilla). Hide some red M&Ms or smarties in the tub, and the race is for the first person to remove the M&Ms from the yoghurt without using their hands! It's a fun game, and can be given added meaning by its relevance to sin: Jesus removes the sin (red) from our hearts, leaving them clean (white) again. NB. depending on how long the M&Ms are in the tub, they can leave behind a bit of a pink stain after you take them out. This is ok, because you can explain that even when Jesus removes our sin and forgives us, sometimes there is still a reminder of it left in us, eg. the consequence of something we've done. To avoid it completely, however, try using red lollies instead which don't leave colour behind.

2 Actors

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : Todd Smith

GrpSize : varied
Description : This a good van game on a youth trip. Someone names two popular actors and you must connect those two actors through different movies. It is like the Kevin Bacon game, but you don't use Kevin Bacon. A good way to kill an hour on a long trip until everyone goes to sleep.

A Maze

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : With masking tape, make a maze design. Take the group and divide them into two parallel lines around the maze. Have one child blindfolded and spun around a few times, to disorient them a little. Then have them try to make it to the other side of the maze, without stepping too far (2-3 steps is too far) off the maze. Have the children on each side encourage the child in which way to go. If the child gets too far off course have them go back and try again. In debriefing ask if it was easy to get from one end of the maze to the other on their own? Did the encouragement from the other kids help them? How did they have to trust the other kids in order to complete this game?

Airplane Blitz

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : Bring a stack of copier paper and let the kids make lots and lots of paper airplanes. Then you need some way to clearly divide the room in half. (The taller the divider the better.) A couch works, but even better was a rolling chalk board. Put half the kids on each side of the divider. Put half the paper airplanes on each side of the divider. Explain that they can only throw ONE plane at a time and they must stop when the leader says "stop". Say "Go". They throw the airplanes over the divider as fast as they can. Planes are flying in both directions. Let them go about 3 minutes. Give them a ten second warning and then say "stop". Count the airplanes on each side of the divider. The team with the least number of planes wins. Repeat it a number of times, keeping track of the wins to get the champions.

A quicker variation: Throw a big bag of loose socks.

Alphabet Ups and Downs

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : Choose a story with many alliterations (I like to use "Fat Fireman Foster" or "The Dreadful Dragon with a Diamond D" from my little boy's Sesame Street storybook). Read the story to the group. Instruct group members to stand up or sit down every time they hear a word that begins with the letter you designate. The quicker you read, the sillier it gets! (One of my favorite passages: "Fat Fireman Foster was a faithful, friendly fire fighter. He was fabulous when a forest fire flickered freely through the fair forest...."

alphabetize my Spaghetti O's

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : Pastor Adam

GrpSize : 3+
Description : This game is great. I was wlking through WalMart preparing for one of our activity nights when I passed by the Spaghetti Os. I saw the alphabet kind and got inspired. What you do is get the Alphabet Spag.Os, as many cans as you like for as many kids or groups of youth you want to participate. At the meeting you can form teams or do an individual competition. Open the cans ahead of time and when you say go they have to put the letters in alphabetical order. If you get the meatball version, you can use them as a letter of your choosing. You can set a time limit or let them go at it as long you can. Our young people loved this game. Another version is to get them some kind of saying, name of your youth group, or whatever you come up. Have fun and enjoy the mess.

An Acting Game

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : What you need is vollenteers (or 2 groups of vollenteers competing against each other. Keep the number of vollenteers in each group small, say 2 or 3. You give them a senario (say a child who came in late). Then you tell them to act out the scene, but they have to integrate the sound effects that you play with the senerio. Play sound effects, some can have nothing to do with the scene (like in the senerio above, my youth pastor played the sound of a bomb, and of a lot of other things). The only real object is to come up with either the most acurate to the sound effects skit, or the most humorous skit (usually the latter).

Animal Game

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : Have group form a circle sitting in chairs. One person is to stand in the middle as the "ring master". Everyone is to choose an animal name for themselves (dog, rhino, hippo, monkey,...). The person in the middle is to have a wadded up newspaper to hit the animals...make sure it is tape up well because it will fall apart! You start with one person asking them to call out one of the animal names in the circle. The person whose name was called must call out another name before he/she is swatted by the ring master. This goes on until someone is swatted before another name is called or they call out the ring masters animal name. Once a person has been swatted, they are to become the ring master and the former ring master. take that persons seat. This game is a lot of fun and can be tweaked to make the rules better.

Animals

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : pumpkinoel

GrpSize : varied
Description : Circle up in chairs. Each person chooses an animal and a motion to go with the animal. We usually make the leader the elephant and he/she always goes first at the start of each round. The first person does his/her animal motion and another person's motion. That person has a second or two to do his/her motion and then someone else's motion. If someone does the wrong motion or is too slow, they're out. If you do the motion of someone who's been knocked out, you're out. This game should be done in silence, but you can say the animals with the motions for the first round just to get things going if you like. My group LOVES this game and many have permanently claimed certain animals as theirs. Even when they aren't present, no one can be that animal - pretty cool, huh?

Apple/Marshmallow Bob

Category : Indoor Games / Mild Activity

Source : unknown

GrpSize : varied
Description : This game begins just like the regular bobbing for apples. However, this game adds a new twist. Immediately after bobbing for apples, the person bobs for marshmellows in a bowl of flour. You can just imagine the results. The game is quite messy so make sure the floor is covered with plastic for quick and easy clean up.
